Title: Do You Know the Cure for What Vexes You?
Text:
Psalm 37:1 (ESV)
1
Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!
Observation:
The advice given in this Psalm comes from David after he had lived a long time; he was an old man and had walked in the way that pleased the Lord.
Psalm 37:25 (ESV)
25 I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.
Acts 13:22 (ESV)
22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, 'I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.'
In my meditation today I want to focus on the wise counsel that David gave in Psalm 37 about how to not fret against the Lord when things do not go our way, and meet our expectation regarding timing. Listen to his wise counsel.
Psalm 37:4 (ESV)
4 Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
The Rx for what vexes us; what distresses us, what causes us to be anxious and worry is our failure to delight in the Lord. Sometimes we need to examine the questions we ask, and learn to ask better questions.
Lord, what are Your desires is a better question than what are my desires. This question will get your focus off of yourself and on the Lord. O that we would learn to find all our joy and pleasure in knowing and doing the will of God. When we learn this lesson we will find that our desires will be aligned with the desires of the Lord.
Psalm 37:5 (ESV)
5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Prayer:
Lord God Almighty, I pray that You would give to each of us sufficient grace to trust in You with our whole heart; to obediently walk in Your Word and in Your way, and do Your will. Lord, mold our hearts until Your desires become our desires. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
Matthew 4:4 (HCSB)
4 But He answered, "It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."
Psalm 2:8 (HCSB)
8 Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance and the ends of the earth Your possession.
