Title: The Helper Who Is Always Near
Text:
Psalm 42:1-3 (ESV)
1
As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
3 My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, "Where is your God?"
Psalm 42:8 (ESV)
8 By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.
Observation:
There are some conditions in life that drive us to think about something that is larger than life as we know it. In our focal passage, the Psalmist was going through one of those seasons.
Where do you turn when discouragement, disappointment and defeat is starring you in the face?
The Psalmist took the upward look, and discovered this eternal truth concerning the source of his help. It is also the source of our help.
Psalm 46:7 (ESV)
7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)
10 Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
If God is your father, remember how great, good and gracious He is; remember His promise to be always near you. God is able; you can trust Him to do what He says He will do.
Hebrews 13:5 (NLT)
5 Don't love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, "I will never fail you. I will never abandon you."
Here is the way to receive all that God has for His people; those who will come to Him with their needs.
James 4:8 (NLT)
8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.
Prayer:
Our Father in heaven, Sovereign Lord, my dear Father, I acknowledge that You are a great God, and greatly to be praised. Father, you are full of grace, and good to all who call upon you in faith; those who come to you without wavering always get through to you.
James 1:6-7 (NLT)
6 But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.
7 Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
Father God, help me to never grow weary of asking You for what I need. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
Matthew 4:4 (HCSB)
4 But He answered, "It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."
Psalm 2:8 (HCSB)
8 Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance and the ends of the earth Your possession.
