Title: I'm So Thankful for the Lessons I Learned from my Grandmother
Text:
Psalm 145:4 (ESV)
4 One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.
Observation:
The following is a poem that griped my heart when I read it a few days ago. It so griped my heart that I wanted to meditate on it, and share it with you. Here is the poem.
"My grandmother took me to church on Sunday all day long, every Sunday into the night Then Monday evening was the missionary meeting. Tuesday evening was usher board meeting. Wednesday evening was prayer meeting. Thursday evening was visit the sick. Friday evening was choir practice. I mean, and at all those gatherings, we sang."
Maya Angelou
There is a song that I have on my playlist by Andrae Crouch that comes to mind as I think about this poem; that song is, "Take Me Back".
The thing I would like to go back too is not the good old days, but the godly old days; those are days when that generation taught us about the works of the Lord in their lives.
I'm praying for God to be real in our lives today like He was in the days that Maya Angelou wrote about, and my days as a child. This is one of the songs I was taught as I sat on the bed of my invalid grandmother with my two cousins. Our home was filled with singing.
Chorus
Every time I feel the spirit
Movin' in my heart I will pray
Every time I feel the spirit
Movin' in my heart I will pray
Up on the mountains my Lord spoke
Out of His mouth came fire and smoke
Looked all around me, it looked so fine
I asked the Lord could it be mine.
The Jordan River is chilly and cold.
It chills the body but not the soul.
There aint but one train upon this track.
It runs to heaven and then right back.
Oh, I have sorrow and I have woe
I have heartaches here below
But while God leads me I'll never fear
For I know that He is near.
This was not the only lesson I learned from my grandmother. I was taught and caught so much from her in those first 13 years of my life. I shudder to think about where I would be today if it had not been for my grandmother Susie Harris Thomas. We called her "Suh Suh" because all the relatives called her that.
We might have been considered poor in material things, but I am so thankful that we were rich in spiritual things; I would choose the latter any day. I am a witness that this verse is true, and it has been real in my life; then and now.
Philippians 4:19 (ESV)
19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Prayer:
Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven. Father, I pray that in our generation that we will be faithful to commend your works to the next generation. Father, I pray that they will not turn away from such a rich heritage. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
