Title: The Rx for Worry with No Harmful Side-Effects
Text:
Matthew 6:25 (KJV)
25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Matthew 6:31-34 (KJV)
31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Observation:
In our focal passage for today, and in the verses not listed, Jesus warns His disciples about the harmful effects of worry, and gives them a prescription that will cure this harmful disease. The answer is found in this verse.
Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
This verse was shared with me over 40 years ago when a friend visited with me in my home after I had major surgery. Some of you may know him; he was Hollis Bryant. The Lord used him to persuade me to exchange my worries for God's promises.
I want to encourage you who are Christ followers to draw near to God, and stay close to Him. I encourage you to give up being a worrier, and devote yourself to being a worshipper.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (KJV)
16 Rejoice evermore.
17 Pray without ceasing.
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
Prayer:
Father God, my dear Father, I am so grateful that You used Your Word, and a servant of God to help me to learn how to shed my worries, and to lean upon the everlasting arms of my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Lord, I am so glad that we don't live on explanations, but upon the promises of a God who is might to save and to sanctify, and who has promised to provide for all of our needs when we cast all of our cares upon Him.
Lord, I rejoice in You, and give praise and thanksgiving to the God of my salvation; my helper and healer. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
Matthew 4:4 (HCSB)
4 But He answered, "It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."
Psalm 2:8 (HCSB)
8 Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance and the ends of the earth Your possession.
