Title: God is Able and Willing to Help You

Text:

Psalm 138:6-8 (ESV)

6  For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.

7  Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me.

8  The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

Observation:

One of my friends wrote this comment recently in Social Media, "God helps those who can't help themselves". In the context he said this, I understood exactly what he was saying. Then, I came across this verse as I was reflecting upon our focal passage for today.

Psalm 113:5-9 (ESV)

5  Who is like the LORD our God, who is seated on high,

6  who looks far down on the heavens and the earth?

7  He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap,

8  to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people.

9  He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the LORD!

What these Psalms say to me is that God is great and greatly to be praised. Other gods pale when compared to the Lord. Yes, He sits on high, but looks low.

It does not matter how low you are or how far you seem to be from the presence of the Lord. He knows your circumstances, and He offers to you a helping hand. Why not open your heart and stretch out your hands to accept the deliverance He is offering to you.

The Lord will do for you what He did for the poor in Psalm 113, and what He did for the Psalmist in Psalm 138.

Psalm 138:7 (ESV)

7  Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me.

Prayer:

Father God, Sovereign Lord, I pray that each of us would open our hearts and our hands to receive all that You want to give those who come to You. In the might name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

"Father, I stretch my hands to Thee,

No other help I know;

If Thou withdraw Thyself from me,

Ah! Whither shall I go?"

Charles Wesley (1741)

Psalm 143:6 (ESV)

6  I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Selah

Psalm 143:8 (ESV)

8  Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.
