The Word for wisdom:
Proverbs 3:26 (AMP)
26 For the Lord shall be your confidence, firm and strong, and shall keep your foot from being caught [in a trap or some hidden danger].
The Word for inspiration:
Psalm 118:8-9 (ESV)
8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.
9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
The Word for encouragement:
Psalm 46:1 (ESV)
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:10-11 (ESV)
10 "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"
11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
My observation:
Living in this world can be tough. That is just the way things are down here. Every one of us will face adversity at some point during our earthly journey. However, the good news is that God's people never have to face trouble alone. That is a recurring theme that runs throughout the bible.
Our focal passages for today bear testimony to the truth that God is always with his people, and that if God makes a promise in his Word, you can count on him being faithful to keep it. Consider the promise that God made to his servant Abraham.
Genesis 12:1-3 (ESV)
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.
2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
As you read the history of God's people you realize how many times God's people doubted that God would ever fulfill this promise. However, through all of their struggles, God was faithful to do what he promised Abraham he would do.
The faithfulness of God is why the psalmist could look back and say what he said in our focal passage from Psalm 46. I know that we can have wonderful peace in the midst of our storm tossed lives. I have seen it in the lives of so many servants of God in my lifetime, and I have experienced it in my own life.
My prayer:
Father God, Sovereign Lord, I pray that you would plant deep within my heart the nature to be still and know that you are God. Father, help me to be able in the midst of adversity to take the upward look, and gaze into the face of my Sovereign Lord. Father, just one look at your face, and the embrace of your loving arms will be enough to calm my troubled heart.
