Title: The Only Comparison That Matters
Text:
Isaiah 6:5-7 (ESV)
5 And I said: "Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!"
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar.
7 And he touched my mouth and said: "Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for."
Observation:
In the four preceding verses, which we wrote about yesterday, Isaiah saw the Lord. In our focal passage for today, Isaiah saw himself.
John Calvin said this:
"Men are never duly touched and impressed with a conviction of their insignificance until they have contrasted themselves with the majesty of God."
Here are some examples from the Bible:
Job 42:5-6 (ESV)
5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you;
6 therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes."
Daniel 10:16-17 (ESV)
16 And behold, one in the likeness of the children of man touched my lips. Then I opened my mouth and spoke. I said to him who stood before me, "O my lord, by reason of the vision pains have come upon me, and I retain no strength.
17 How can my lord's servant talk with my lord? For now no strength remains in me, and no breath is left in me."
Luke 5:8 (ESV)
8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord."
Revelation 1:17-18 (ESV)
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last,
18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.
Prayer:
Father God, Sovereign Lord, I pray that people everywhere would see You in all of Your glory, and they would see themselves, and cry out like Isaiah, "Woe is me".
Father God, we need a healing in our land; a healing that only You can send; a healing only You can provide. Lord, send a revival, and let it begin in me. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)
14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Matthew 4:4 (HCSB)
4 But He answered, "It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."
Psalm 2:8 (HCSB)
8 Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance and the ends of the earth Your possession.
