Title: The Keys to Unity in the Church
Text:
1 Timothy 5:1-2 (ESV)
1 Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers,
2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.
Observation:
One of the greatest challenges in the family of God is how we get along with people who have many differences, and many preferences that are different from us. We do not always dwell together in unity.
Psalm 133:1 (ESV)
1 Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!
Unity in the family of God; it is a beautiful thing. Notice how the Psalmist describes unity, and the blessings that flow from unity.
Psalm 133:2-3 (ESV)
2 It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes!
3 It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.
Jesus in His high priestly prayer asked that the family of God would have unity. I believe the Father will answer that prayer.
John 17:20-21 (ESV)
20 "I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,
21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
Are you willing to pursue peace by conducting yourself in the manner that the Apostle Paul taught Timothy to do in our focal passage? This is the key to unity.
Colossians 3:14 (ESV)
14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
John 13:34-35 (ESV)
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
Prayer:
Father, I pray that the prayer that Jesus prayed for us to be one will become a reality in the church of the living God, and may it begin in our relationships beginning in our homes, and continuing to the household of God. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
Acts 6:4 (ESV)
4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."
Psalm 65:2 (ESV)
2 O you who hear prayer, to you shall all flesh come.
