Title: The Power of Living in the Present

Text:

Psalm 34:11-15 (ESV)

11  Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

12  What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good?

13  Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.

14  Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

15  The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry.

Observation:

Do you want to know how to live your life in a way that would be pleasing to the Lord?

If so, David, the writer of this Psalm would be a good one to listen to. After all, this is what the Lord said about him.

1 Samuel 13:13-14 (ESV)

13  And Samuel said to Saul, "You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the LORD your God, with which he commanded you. For then the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.

14  But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought out a man after his own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you."

Notice the emphasis on obedience; David had a heart that leaned toward obeying God; he learned obedience.

Psalm 119:34 (ESV)

34  Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart.

In our focal passage David advice was to live life in the present; one day at a time, living in the fear of the Lord. Having the Lord in your heart makes all the difference in the world.

Psalm 4:7 (ESV)

7  You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.

When you have the Lord in your heart, the Spirit of God will be able to control your tongue. That is the only way we can keep our mouth under control.

Psalm 34:13 (ESV)

13  Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.

Prayer:

Our Father in heaven, my dear Father, I pray that You will help Your people to learn obedience like David learned obedience; even as Jesus learned obedience. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Hebrews 5:7-8 (ESV)

7  In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.

8  Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.

Matthew 4:4 (HCSB)
4 But He answered, "It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."

Psalm 2:8 (HCSB)
8 Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance and the ends of the earth Your possession.
