Title: Why Is There Suffering in the World?

Text:

Genesis 3:16-19 (ESV)
16 To the woman he said, "I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." 17 And to Adam he said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

Observation:

I went to bed last night with this prayer on my lips and from my heart; Lord, what do You want me to write about tomorrow?

When I woke up this morning and before getting out of bed I was reading an article on my phone, and this topic leaped off the page as the topic for today. The word that touched my heart was a person writing about the troubles she was going through.

So, when I came to my desk with this thought on my mind I begin to search the scriptures. My search took me to the book of beginnings; the Book of Genesis.

What I know about troubles is that it is the common lot of all people. That led me to one of the earliest books of the Bible; the Book of Job.

Job 14:1 (ESV)
"Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble.

I don't understand everything there is to know about suffering. However, I am acquainted with suffering in my life, in the lives of my loved ones, and in the lives of my friends. Suffering can make you stronger, and it can make you weaker. It can bring you closer to God, and it can drive you away from God.

Job 13:15 (ESV)
Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face.

Job 2:9 (ESV)
Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die."

What we have in us matters more than what happens to us. My hope is in Jesus. God's grace is sufficient for anything you will ever face in life and in death.

John 16:33 (ESV)
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."

Prayer:

Father God, my dear Father, I thank You for loving me supremely, and for caring about me more than anyone in the whole world. Father, I thank You for sending Your Son into the world and for giving me the faith to believe in Him. And because of the divine presence of Christ in me, I can overcome the troubles I face in the world. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Matthew 4:4 (HCSB)
4 But He answered, "It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."

Psalm 2:8 (HCSB)
8 Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance and the ends of the earth Your possession.
