How Can I Overcome My Fears?

Text:

Psalm 27:1-3 (ESV)

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

2  When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall.

3  Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident.

Observation:

The first thing I want to say about fears is that they are universal. Even people of faith have fears. David begins this Psalm talking about his faith in the Lord.

But, he also tells us later in the Psalm about his fears, and their source. Let me insert right here that God is not the source of your fears.

2 Timothy 1:7 (HCSB)

7  For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.

Let's take a look at the source of the Psalmist's fears because he describes them for us.

  1. His enemies was a source of his fears.

Psalm 27:6 (ESV)

6  And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD.

2. His family was a source of his fears.

Psalm 27:10 (ESV)

10  For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in.

3. His adversaries were telling lies about him.

Psalm 27:12 (ESV)

12  Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence.

Identify the source of your fears, but don't give in to them. Rather, give your fears to the Lord. David professes his faith in our focal passage for today, Psalm 27:1-3.

Then he sought the Lord in prayer, Psalm 27:4-13. Finally, he waited in confident faith upon the Lord to deliver him from his fears.

Psalm 27:14 (ESV)

14  Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!

Prayer:

Father, I am so grateful that you are not the source of our fears. Rather, you are the solution to our fears. Father, I ask for sufficient faith to trust you more, and to wait on You. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

--

Isaiah 55:11 (KJV)
11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
