Title: What is the Most You Can Do?
Text:
Ephesians 6:18 (HCSB)
18 Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert in this with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.
Observation:
Our one word for today is pray. It is impossible to overstate the value of prayer in the lives of the people of God. We forfeit so much peace and power when we neglect prayer in our daily walk.
The use of the word all tells us the universal practice of prayer should have in our lives. We are encouraged to pray in this manner: all times, all prayers, all perseverance, and all saints.
I remind you that prayer is not the least you can do; prayer is the most you can do.
There are two reasons that support the above statement. First, we are reminded to pray in the Spirit. To pray is to worship; this is something we will do in heaven continuously so it behooves us to embrace the universal practice of prayer while we are here on earth.
John 4:23-24 (ESV)
23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.
24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."
Secondly, we are not alone when we pray; we have a helper, the Holy Spirit of God helps us to pray, empowers our prayers, and prays for us.
Romans 8:26-27 (ESV)
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
There is nothing that you can do that is greater than prayer; prayer is the greater work.
John 14:12-14 (HCSB)
12 "I assure you: The one who believes in Me will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.
13 Whatever you ask in My name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.
Do you believe that prayer is the most you can do? Do you believe that there is power in prayer? Then why not devote yourself to the universal practice of prayer.
Colossians 4:2 (HCSB)
2 Devote yourselves to prayer; stay alert in it with thanksgiving.
Prayer:
Our Father in heaven, my dear Father, I ask that You would stir up within Your people a burning desire in our hearts to devote ourselves to prayer. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
Matthew 4:4 (HCSB)
4 But He answered, "It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."
Psalm 2:8 (HCSB)
8 Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance and the ends of the earth Your possession.
