Title: When Endurance Matters

Text:

Psalm 62:1-2 (ESV)
1
For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

Observation:

The recently completed NBA Championship series reminds us of a timeless truth about endurance. The San Antonio Spurs would do anything to replay the last 60 seconds of that 48 minute game. The Spurs just did not have the energy and or skill to finish the game. Just one rebound or one free throw would have sealed the victory and the championship in game six.

I am so glad that when it comes to endurance in the Christian life, and winning the prize; that we don't have to depend upon our energy and skill.

There's a race for us to run—Hallelujah,
and a way for us the race to win.
To all those who have begun—Hallelujah,
God has spoken, "Look away to Him!"

  • Look away! O look away!
    Look to Jesus now today!
Look away from everything unto Jesus,
Look away from everything to Him!

O, the happy condition of knowing that God alone is the author and finisher of our faith and our salvation. I'm looking to Jesus.

Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV)
1
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Prayer:

Our Father in heaven, my dear Father, I am so grateful that my salvation does not depend upon my strength, but that it depends upon Your strength. Lord, I thank You that my sin debt has been marked, "Paid in Full". In Jesus name, Amen.

John 19:30 (ESV)
30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished," and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Acts 6:4 (KJV)
4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.
