Title: The Preparation for Opportunity

Text:

Song of Songs 5:2-6 (ESV)
2
I slept, but my heart was awake. A sound! My beloved is knocking. “Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one, for my head is wet with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.”
3
I had put off my garment; how could I put it on? I had bathed my feet; how could I soil them?
4
My beloved put his hand to the latch, and my heart was thrilled within me.
5
I arose to open to my beloved, and my hands dripped with myrrh, my fingers with liquid myrrh, on the handles of the bolt.
6 I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had turned and gone. My soul failed me when he spoke. I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer.

Observation:

The key to handling opportunity is to be prepared. When opportunity knocks on your door, being prepared gives you the tools to seize it.

The story of the woman described in our text shows what happens when we are unprepared. She was not prepared to seize the opportunity when it knocked on her door. Not a happy outcome.

Here is another story that turned out happily.

John 5:2-3 (ESV)
2
Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades.
3
In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed.
John 5:5 (ESV)
5
One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.

John 5:8-9 (ESV)
8
Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.”
9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.

Prayer:

Father God, my dear Father, I pray for eyes to see, ears to hear, and a life that has been prepared for the next time that opportunity knocks at my door.

Father, I am leaning upon the everlasting arms of my Savior to lead and guide me as I travel up the Kings Highway. Lord, give me the strength to seize the opportunities that come to those who follow Jesus. Father, there is no one I would rather follow then Jesus, I know that He knows the way to where You are, and that is where I long to be. It’s in His name that I pray, Amen.

“Down in the valley, or upon the mountain steep,
Close beside my Savior would my heart ever keep;
He will lead me safely in the path that He has trod,
Up to where they gather in the rest of God.”
