Title: How to Overcome the Weapons Used by the Enemy of Your Soul

Text:

Psalm 140:6-13 (HCSB)
6
I say to the LORD, "You are my God." Listen, LORD, to my cry for help.
7
Lord GOD, my strong Savior, You shield my head on the day of battle.
8 LORD, do not grant the desires of the wicked; do not let them achieve their goals. [Otherwise] they will become proud. Selah

9
When those who surround me rise up, may the trouble their lips cause overwhelm [them].
10
Let hot coals fall on them. Let them be thrown into the fire, into the abyss, never again to rise.
11
Do not let a slanderer stay in the land. Let evil relentlessly hunt down a violent man.
12
I know that the LORD upholds the just cause of the poor, justice for the needy.
13 Surely the righteous will praise Your name; the upright will live in Your presence.

Observation:

Today's text is a continuation of where we left off yesterday (Psalm 140:1-5). In verses six through eleven we read the prayer of David. There is wisdom in making prayer the first thing you do, and not the last resort.

In this prayer you see that David is not a stranger to prayer. He acknowledged that God is Lord, and that God was his father, and he was God's child. When God is your Father, you can talk to Him, and you can tell Him what you need, and how you feel. You don't have to take matters into your hands; you can place all of your troubles in God's hands. God has all power in His hands; there is nothing too difficult for Him.

David also relied upon God's promises. God is a faithful God, and you can trust Him to keep His promises.

Psalm 140:12 (HCSB)
12 I know that the LORD upholds the just cause of the poor, justice for the needy.

Finally, David was able to have a thankful and a joyful heart in the midst of his troubles. It is true that God inhabits the praise of His people. So, find a place for praise in your storms. In God's presence you will find peace in the midst of your troubles.

Psalm 140:13 (HCSB)
13 Surely the righteous will praise Your name; the upright will live in Your presence.

Prayer:

Father God, Sovereign Lord, my dear Father, I praise and thank You that I never have to face my problems and troubles alone. Father, I pray that I will always remember to make prayer my first option. Father, I ask for the grace to live continually in Your presence; that is where the hope and the help come from. In the name of Your darling Son, Jesus the Christ, I pray, Amen.

--

Proverbs 30:5 (ESV)
5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Psalm 119:11 (ESV)
11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

  1. Yes, another reason to pray, and to make prayer our first response rather than our last.
