Title: What is Your Greatest Fear?
Text:
Psalm 112:1-8 (ESV)
1 Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments! 2 His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. 5 It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. 6 For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. 7 He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. 8 His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
Observation:
There are two meanings to the word fear; one means to be afraid, and the other means to feel reverence for somebody or something.
In verse one the Psalmist speaks of the fear of the Lord; that is reverence. In verse two he mentions some of the things that we may have fears about. That list includes family and finances, and in verse four he mentions fear of the dark; these are things people are afraid of.
This is one list of the top 10 fears that people have:
1. Flying
2. Public speaking
3. Heights
4. Dark
5. Intimacy
6. Death
7. Failure
8. Rejection
9. Spiders
10. Commitment.
No matter what you fear; not matter what you are afraid of; there is hope for you to overcome these fears. What the Psalmist found to be true, you can find to be true in your life.
Psalm 112:1 (NLT)
Praise the Lord! How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands.
Prayer:
Our Father in heaven, my dear Father, I am so grateful that when we fear the Lord that we don't have to be fearful or afraid of anybody or anything. Father, I ask you to help each of us to learn to lean on the everlasting arms of the Lord. O, the blessings for those who fear the Lord, and trust in Him with their whole heart. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
I have peace complete with my Lord so near,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
