Title: Be Forbearing with One Another

Text:

Colossians 3:12-14 (HCSB)

12  Therefore, God's chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,

13  accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also ⌊forgive⌋.

14  Above all, ⌊put on⌋ love—the perfect bond of unity.

Observation:

Today I want to look at this passage with the focus on accepting one another. If there was ever a time in the Body of Christ that we needed to put on something, it is surely now.

Colossians 3:13 (AMP)

13  Be gentle and forbearing with one another and, if one has a difference (a grievance or complaint) against another, readily pardoning each other; even as the Lord has [freely] forgiven you, so must you also [forgive].

Think about the vices that the Apostle Paul urged the believers in Christ to put off.

Colossians 3:8 (AMP)

8  But now put away and rid yourselves [completely] of all these things: anger, rage, bad feeling toward others, curses and slander, and foulmouthed abuse and shameful utterances from your lips!

What a difference it would make in our world if God's people would put on the virtues that are found in Jesus. O, that the Christ in us was unleashed from us, and would shine brightly upon a world that needs some light in these dark and dangerous times.

Prayer:

Father, I lift up and exalt Your most holy and righteous name; the name that is above every name on earth and in heaven.

Father, I ask that You would stir the hearts of Your people, and draw us closer to You, and to each other. Father, helps us to make allowances for the faults of one another, as You have done for us. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

--

Isaiah 55:11 (KJV)
11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Title: The Importance of Accepting and Forgiving One Another

Text:

Colossians 3:12-13 (HCSB)

12  Therefore, God's chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,

13  accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also ⌊forgive⌋.

Observation:

In this series we have looked at these occurrences of one another in the Bible.

  • Pray for one another
  • Love one another
  • Accept one another
  • Forgive one another

If we are going to obey the new commandment that Jesus gives; to love one another, then we will have to learn how to forgive one another. Notice that the failure to forgive one another is a hinderance in getting our prayers answered.

Matthew 6:14-15 (HCSB)

14  "For if you forgive people their wrongdoing, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well.

15  But if you don't forgive people, your Father will not forgive your wrongdoing.

God has done His part; He has forgiven you. How are you doing in your part; considering what the Apostle says in this portion of our focal passage.

Colossians 3:12 (NLT)

12  Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for loving and forgiving us. Father, I ask that You bend our will until we are willing to clothe ourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience as we, with the strength that You provide, show more love, acceptance, and forgiveness of one another.

Father, I pray a blessing over the hearers and doers of Your most holy and divine Word.

Title: The Power of Loving One Another

Text:

John 13:34-35 (HCSB)

34  "I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another.

35  By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

Observation:

In giving His followers this new commandment Jesus took the commandments to a new level. He took it from the law, and put it on His character.

We see the character of God in human flesh; we see it in Jesus, and He says love others as I have loved you.

1 Peter 2:21 (HCSB)

21  For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in His steps.

1 John 4:8 (HCSB)

8  The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

This commandant to love is instructive and inspirational. It is powerful and productive.

1 Peter 4:8 (HCSB)

8  Above all, maintain an intense love for each other, since love covers a multitude of sins.

Prayer:

Father, I thank You for loving us with an everlasting love, and for loving us first.

Father, I am so grateful that You have poured out Your love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit that You have given us.

Romans 5:5 (HCSB)

5  This hope will not disappoint ⌊us⌋, because God's love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Father, help us to trust and obey, and to be inspired and encouraged to love one another as You have loved us.  So, thankful that what You command us to do, You enable us to do. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Isaiah 55:11 (KJV)

Title: The Power of Praying for One Another

Text:

Colossians 1:9-14 (HCSB)

9  For this reason also, since the day we heard this, we haven't stopped praying for you. We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding,

10  so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing ⌊to Him⌋, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God.

11  May you be strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for all endurance and patience, with joy

12  giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the saints' inheritance in the light.

13  He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son He loves.

14  We have redemption, the forgiveness of sins, in Him.

Observation:

Today's focal passage is a prayer for others. All that the Apostle Paul knew about these people was what he heard about them from their pastor.

What a wonderful thing it is to have other people that don't even know you personally to care about you enough to pray for you.

Notice the content of Paul's prayer. It is a prayer for the spiritual growth for the recipients of this letter.

Colossians 1:2 (HCSB)

2  To the saints in Christ at Colossae, ⌊who are⌋ faithful brothers. Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

Paul wrote this to the church at Ephesus about the topic of prayer.

Ephesians 6:18-19 (HCSB)

18  Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert in this with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.

19  Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel.

Prayer:

Father, hallowed be Your name. Father, I am so grateful for the privilege we have to pray and the power of prayer. Father, I am so thankful that You are a God who hears and answers the prayers of Your people.

Father, I ask that You would stir our hearts to be more devoted to prayer, and to praying for the spiritual growth of one another. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Title: God's Plan for You

Text:

John 16:7-11 (HCSB)

7  Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don't go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you.

8  When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment:

9  About sin, because they do not believe in Me;

10  about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;

11  and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

Observation:

The disciples had walked with Jesus, and had the pleasure of seeing Him do wonderful and amazing things. In their minds Jesus leaving them was the worst possible outcome.

However, God had something better, and God's best required that Jesus must return to be with the Father, and then the Holy Spirit would come and live in them.

Jesus leaving was God's plan for His disciples then, and for us today. It is a part of God's plan for the redemption of fallen mankind.

God has done His part; Jesus has been lifted up, and the Holy Spirit has come down to dwell in the hearts of God's people.

John 3:14-16 (HCSB)

14  Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

15  so that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life.

16  "For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.

John 14:16-17 (HCSB)

16  And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.

17  He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive Him because it doesn't see Him or know Him. But you do know Him, because He remains with you and will be in you.

God has done His part, and He has given a command to His people to do our part.

Acts 1:8 (HCSB)

8  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Mark 16:19-20 (HCSB)

19  Then after speaking to them, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.

20  And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the accompanying signs.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for sending Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and Your people to be Your witnesses to the whole world that You so love. Father, may we be faithful in going, so that others will come to You and find redemption in Christ. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Title: What Does It Take to Maintain Peace?

Text:

John 14:6 (HCSB)

6  Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Observation:

The question posed in today's title prompted me to launch today's meditation, and prayer.

When we repent of our sins it involves changing the path that we walk. We are walking one way, and we turn and walk in the way that Jesus walks. However, the new life as a Christ follower is not without difficulty.

How do you overcome the ups and downs that come after you make that initial turn to the Jesus Way?

Jesus gives the answer in our focal verse for today. Notice that Jesus said, "I am the way".

The way to maintain the peace of God in your life is to daily walk in the pathway of Jesus. Notice the lyrics of this song.

"We'll walk in the light, beautiful light,

Come where the dew-drops of mercy are bright;

Shine all around us by day and by night,

Jesus, the light of the world."

There is great peace that is always present when we walk in way of Jesus; when we abide, agree, and align our walk with His walk.

Psalm 119:165 (HCSB)

165  Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your instruction; nothing makes them stumble.

Prayer:

Father, O how wonderful it is to know that Jesus is the way that leads to the blessings that You give to Your people.

Father, lead and guide our lives so that we will have the will to walk in the Way; to walk in the light of Jesus.

Father, give us the strength to not grow weary as we learn to lean on Jesus with our whole life. In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

My Souls Sings:

"I'm learning to lean, learning to lean,

Learning to lean on Jesus.

Finding more power than I'd ever dreamed,

I'm learning to lean on Jesus."

Title: Where Do You Turn When You Experience Unrest?

Text:

John 10:10 (HCSB)

10  A thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.

Observation:

There are times in our life when the Lord keeps bringing the same topic to our mind. The word peace is the word that the Lord keeps talking to me about. So, when God speaks, I listen.

This passage was the one that triggered my meditation today. It is an Old Testament passage.

Leviticus 26:6 (HCSB)

6  I will give peace to the land, and you will lie down with nothing to frighten ⌊you⌋. I will remove dangerous animals from the land, and no sword will pass through your land.

This is what the New Testament says about the Old Testament.

Romans 15:4 (HCSB)

4  For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that we may have hope through endurance and through the encouragement from the Scriptures.

No matter what trial or trouble you may be facing in this season of your life; don't give up, and don't despair. When you feel down, and the weight of your troubles seem too much to bear, that is the time when you have the greatest blessing just a step and a look away.

What should you do? The hymn writer Helen Howarth Lemmel said it this way in the song, "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus".

"O soul, are you weary and troubled?

No light in the darkness you see?

There's light for a look at the Savior,

And life more abundant and free.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in His wonderful face,

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,

In the light of His glory and grace."

If you take your eyes off of yourself, and turn your eyes upon Jesus, you will find in Him all that you need to align your heart to receive and enjoy the life giving and soul peace of Jesus in You. Remember Jesus made this promise, which has your name written on it.

Hebrews 13:5 (HCSB)

5  Your life should be free from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have, for He Himself has said, I will never leave you or forsake you.

Prayer:

Father, I exalt Your name, and give You the glory that only You deserve. Father, I am so thankful that You are the rock on which I can build my life upon.

Father, I'm grateful that there is never a moment when You are not present with Your people.

Father, what an encouragement this is as we face the trials, troubles, and temptations we encounter in this fallen world. Father, we need and we have the peace of God within us. Let those who agree and are appreciative say, Amen.

Title: What Is Stealing Your Peace?

Text:

John 17:25-26 (HCSB)

25  Righteous Father! The world has not known You. However, I have known You, and these have known that You sent Me.

26  I made Your name known to them and will make it known, so the love You have loved Me with may be in them and I may be in them.

Observation:

The topic of today's devotional brings to mind another question that is useful before considering the question posed by today's title.

Do I have the peace of God living in me? This is a peace that God gives His people, and no one can take His peace from you.

Consider some of the things that cannot rob you of the peace of God:

  • pain
  • persecution
  • sickness
  • slander
  • hatred
  • lies

All of these things and more were faced by the servants of God. Additionally, they were faced by Jesus, and His disciples. Today, you may be facing one or more of these peace robbers.

Our focal passage is a portion of the prayer that Jesus prayed for His people, and that prayer includes you. I am so grateful that Jesus is praying for you and me.

John 17:20 (HCSB)

20  I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in Me through their message.

The peace of God is a gift from God with Your name written on it. Believe Him, and receive your blessing.

John 14:1 (HCSB)

1  "Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me.

John 14:27 (HCSB)

27  "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful.

Prayer:

Father, hallowed be Your name. Father, thank You for loving us with the same love that You loved Jesus.

Father, I thank You for pouring out Your love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit that You have given to us (Romans 5:5).

Father, I thank You that the Son that You so loved is also alive in our hearts.

Father, draw us nearer to You, and I pray that we would always remember the precious gifts that You have given us in Christ Jesus our Lord. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

--

Isaiah 55:11 (KJV)

Title: Have You Received the Gift of Peace?

Text:

John 14:27 (HCSB)

27  "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful.

Observation:

I had one of those light bulb type experiences when reading a devotional by Oswald Chambers recently. He said this, "The angels did not prophesy about peace; rather they proclaimed peace".

Who are the recipients of this peace?

Luke 2:14 (HCSB)

14  Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people He favors!

Romans 5:1 (HCSB)

1  Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

The peace of God is alive today in the hearts of God's people who have the divine presence of Jesus living in them. Is Jesus alive in you?

I am so glad that I can sing with a confident faith in God the words of this old hymn of the church.

"I'm possessed of a hope that is steadfast and sure,

Since Jesus came into my heart;

And no dark clouds of doubt now my pathway obscure,

Since Jesus came into my heart",

There is nothing in this world sweeter than having peace with God, and having the peace of God ruling and reigning in our life. Do you know Him? Have you received Him?

Romans 5:1-2 (HCSB)

1  Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

2  We have also obtained access through Him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

Prayer:

Father hallowed be Your name. Father, I am so grateful for the grace of God that provides the means for the war to cease, and for those who are unworthy to be made worthy by the precious and royal blood of Jesus the Messiah of God.

Father, I am so grateful that as a child of God, I have peace that no one can steal. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Title: Are You Fully Alive?

Text:

Acts 20:35 (HCSB)

35  In every way I've shown you that by laboring like this, it is necessary to help the weak and to keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, for He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"

Observation:

What does it mean to be fully alive? Consider the words of Jesus recorded in this verse.

John 10:10 (HCSB)

10  A thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.

How can we have a life that is fully alive; a life that pleases God, and is a blessing to others, and to ourselves. What Jesus said about this is our focal passage for today.

Acts 20:35 (HCSB)

35  In every way I've shown you that by laboring like this, it is necessary to help the weak and to keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, for He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"

I remember the lyrics of a song from a youth camp many years ago. The words were similar to these, "Someone needs you Lord, come by here".

Many people that we come in contact with daily are praying a prayer for help. We need to listen to their cry, and if we are walking with God, and God is alive in us, then we should meet that need in the name of the Lord.

What is the desire of Jesus? This is what He says in the Word of God.

John 20:21 (HCSB)

21  Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."

Why not pause and consider the blessings and the benefits that accrue from being a giver. Then make a decision to be light and salt in this world that so desperately needs the Lord. Even the smallest gift yields large results.

Matthew 10:42 (HCSB)

42  And whoever gives just a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple—I assure you: He will never lose his reward!"

Prayer:

Father, I lift up, and exalt Your name above every name on earth, and in heaven.

Father, stir the hearts of Your people until the desires of our hearts are aligned with the desires of Your heart.

Father, change our hearts so that we will experience in our life the reality that we are more blessed when we are givers than when we are receivers. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Title: Are You Able to Fulfill Your Purpose?

Text:

Psalm 85:10-11 (HCSB)

10  Faithful love and truth will join together; righteousness and peace will embrace.

11  Truth will spring up from the earth, and righteousness will look down from heaven.

Observation:

There is nothing more persuasive and powerful than the heart that has been filled by the presence of the Holy Spirit of God; the presence of the the love of God in our heart.

Is the love of God present in your life? This is God's promise to all who believe in Jesus, and have received Him.

John 1:12 (NLT)

12  But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.

Romans 5:5 (HCSB)

5  This hope will not disappoint ⌊us⌋, because God's love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

There is nothing that the child of God lacks. We have everything that we need to fulfill the purposes of God for our life. If God be for us, who can be against us?

Luke 1:37 (HCSB)

37  For nothing will be impossible with God."

Prayer:

Father, I exalt Your name, and give You the praise and thanksgiving that You alone deserve.

Father, I am persuaded that I have everything that I need to fulfill the purpose for which I was born, and born again. Father, I am persuaded that the God who lives in me is greater than any difficulty, danger, or disappointment that I will ever encounter in my walk through this world.

Father, I am so glad that I am on my way to heaven, and that this world is not my home.

Father, thank You for bringing heaven to earth by sending the Holy Spirit of God, who is love, to live in my heart forever. Let all those who agree say, Amen.

Title: Have You Been Persuaded?

Text:

Romans 8:38-39 (HCSB)

38  For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, ⌊hostile⌋ powers,

39  height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!

Observation:

Are you persuaded that God is able to save and keep His people; the people who He has rescued by the precious and royal blood of His only begotten son.

1 Peter 1:5 (HCSB)

5  You are being protected by God's power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

The God who provided the means for your deliverance is also able to keep you, and to keep His promises.

The Holy Spirit of God makes the love of God real because God has poured out His love into our hearts.

Romans 5:5 (HCSB)

5  This hope will not disappoint ⌊us⌋, because God's love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Lyrics - One Thing Remains

"Higher than the mountains that I face

Stronger than the power of the grave

Constant through the trial and the change

One thing... Remains, yes

One thing Remains.

Your love never fails, it never gives up

It never runs out on me."

As our focal passages says, "Nothing can separate us from the love of God". Let's unite our hearts together in love, and allow the love of God that is within us to flow out of us into the lives of all that we come in contact with. God's love is forever, and His love never fails, and never gives up on you and me.

Prayer:

Father, I lift my whole heart up to You in praise and adoration of Your most holy and righteous name.

Father, I am so grateful for Your love that has been poured out into my heart, and it is the source of my persuasion that You are real; that Your love is real, and the peace of God that rules and reigns in my heart is real. And, all who agree say, Amen.
